Do the benefits of chess instruction transfer to academic and cognitive skills?

* It is important to note that the case studies varied in their range of testing from sample size to the duration of chess instruction, to the quality of teaching, to the child’s starting age, to how far the students progressed (e.g., did they advance beyond the novice level, did they reach a level where critical and creative thinking were often present, etc.). The differences in testing methods should be considered when analyzing results.

Through personal observation of 20+ years of teaching, my perspective is that chess can be a helpful supplement to a child’s education through its development of critical and creative thinking. It can also get kids excited about learning and help them gain confidence, which can spill over to other academic areas.
